You've been practicing the wrong thing your entire life.

This course fixes that.

8 modules. One framework. The complete ecological science of how skills actually develop. Not tips. Not hacks. A different theory of what learning is.

THE STORY

I built this course because I needed it and it didn't exist.

I was a 2x NCAA National Champion in discus. Six-time All-American. I trained thousands of hours with some of the best coaches in the country. I did everything right.

And then competition would come and something would slip. Not always. Not catastrophically. But enough. The timing would drift. The positions would tighten. The thing I could do perfectly in practice would lose its edge when the context changed.

My coaches said it was mental. That I needed to trust my preparation. That the reps would carry me.

They were wrong. Not because they were bad coaches. Because the model they were coaching from was bad. The model that says: drill the technique in isolation, repeat until automatic, then transfer it to competition. That model sounds logical. It also doesn't work. And the science has known this since the 1960s.

I found that science in 2020. Ecological psychology. James Gibson. Karl Newell. Keith Davids. Nikolai Bernstein. Forty years of research on how organisms actually coordinate with their environments. Research that explains exactly why isolated practice fails to transfer. Research that almost nobody in mainstream coaching knows about.

It changed everything about how I understand skill. Not just in athletics. In music. In writing. In parenting. In every domain where a human being is trying to get better at something.

I spent four years going deep. Reading the papers. Applying the principles. Testing them across domains. Writing about them every week in my newsletter. And eventually I realized: nobody had taken this science and packaged it into something a coach, athlete, musician, or teacher could actually use without getting a PhD first.

So I built it. That's Foundations.

THE REFRAME

This is not a course about practice tips. It's an operating system replacement.

Most courses hand you techniques. Do this drill. Try this exercise. Follow this protocol. You add them to your existing framework and hope something clicks.

Foundations doesn't do that. Foundations replaces the framework.

The framework you're currently running says: skills are programs stored in the brain, built through repetition, and recalled through memory. Input. Process. Output. The brain as computer.

The framework Foundations installs says: skills are relationships between an organism and an environment that become more finely tuned over time through perception. There is no program. There is no storage. There is attunement.

That's not a philosophical distinction. It changes what you do tomorrow in your practice session. It changes what cues you give as a coach. It changes how you design learning environments. It changes what you look for when you watch someone perform.

Once you see through this lens, you don't go back. Not because you're being loyal to a theory. Because the old lens stops making sense.

WHAT'S INSIDE

8 modules. Each one dismantles something you believed and replaces it with something true.

01

The Lie of the Machine Model

The input-process-output model dominated for a century. This module shows you exactly what it got wrong, why skills built on top of it are fragile, and why your best performance in practice disappears when the stakes change.

02

Direct Perception

James Gibson’s radical idea that you don’t process information from the environment — you perceive it directly. This rewires how you think about what skilled performers are actually doing. Spoiler: they’re not running programs. They’re reading the world.

03

Affordances

The environment is full of invitations to act. A gap in the defense affords a pass. A silence in the music affords a fill. Mastery is learning to read these invitations. This module trains you to see action possibilities you’ve been walking past your entire life.

04

The Constraints Framework

Karl Newell’s model: every skill emerges from the interaction of three constraint categories. Organismic, environmental, and task. Change any one and the movement solution reorganizes. This is where the theory becomes a tool. By the end of this module, you’ll be designing constraints, not prescribing techniques.

05

Degrees of Freedom

Bernstein’s insight: the body has far more movement options than any program could specify. The system doesn’t need instructions. It needs boundaries that let it self-organize. This module shows you how skill development actually works at the mechanical level. It looks nothing like what you were taught.

06

Representative Design

Brunswik’s principle: practice must preserve the informational structure of performance. Strip the context and you strip the information the learner needs. This is why blocked drills fail to transfer. This is why your practice room might be lying to you. This module fixes that.

07

The Constraints-Led Approach

Keith Davids’s practical methodology for designing practice environments that let skills emerge without explicit instruction. This is the bridge between the theory and the field. Between the lab and Tuesday night’s session. This is what you’ve been waiting for since module one.

08

Designing Your Practice

Take everything from modules 1 through 7 and apply it to your domain. A step-by-step protocol for redesigning how you practice, coach, or teach. Sport, music, business, movement, language. The framework is domain-agnostic because it describes the mechanism underneath all skill. This is where you build something.

THE SHIFT

What changes.

BEFORE FOUNDATIONS

AFTER FOUNDATIONS

BEFORE

You practice by drilling techniques in isolation and hoping they transfer.

AFTER

You design practice environments that contain the information the performance environment requires.

BEFORE

You think skill is about movement execution.

AFTER

You understand skill is about perception, and you train perception first.

BEFORE

You diagnose "the mental game" when practice doesn't transfer to performance.

AFTER

You diagnose the practice environment and redesign the constraints.

BEFORE

You coach by prescribing technique and correcting error.

AFTER

You coach by manipulating constraints and letting the skill self-organize.

BEFORE

You see talented people and assume they're gifted.

AFTER

You see attuned people and understand the environment that shaped them.

WHO THIS IS FOR

If you've ever felt the gap between your practice and your performance, this was built for you.

You might be a coach who has watched athletes perform beautifully in training and fall apart when it counts. You might be a musician who has logged thousands of hours but freezes when the red light goes on. You might be a teacher who senses that something about how learning is supposed to work doesn't match how your students actually learn. You might be a martial artist, a surgeon, a golfer, a writer, a parent, a programmer. Anyone who develops skills and suspects the conventional model is missing something fundamental.

You don't need a science background. You don't need to know who Gibson or Bernstein are. You need the willingness to question what you were taught about how learning works. That's the only prerequisite.

WHAT THIS IS NOT

This is not a productivity hack.

This is not “10 tips to practice better.”

This is not motivational content dressed in a lab coat.

This is not a course you watch once, nod along to, and forget by Thursday.

This is the operating system underneath every skill you will ever develop. Once it's installed, it runs in the background of everything you do.
